One of the more unusual selections from our collection is this 1976 reprint of The Colonial Housewife by Susannah Carter, originally published in 1772.
At the time, it was the only cookbook published in the United States. While an introduction, glossary and illustrations were added for readability in this edition, much of the content remains just as the original. Curious about how to prepare a hare pie? How to keep green pease til Christmas? How to make birch wine? It’s all here, just how our fore-mothers did it. The book also includes reproductions of the original illustrations done by Paul Revere.
